More details

Little Wildlings Nature Playgroup is a nomadic, nature-based play group for children who are not yet of school age. Meeting in wild spaces around the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane, our playgroups  follows a loose rhythm that revolves around free play and exploration in nature surrounded by a loving and compassionate community of parents who are guiding their children on their life journey.

Whilst unstructured nature play will dominate the session, our Little Wildlings are also invited to participate in weekly invitational activities that might including story time, seasonal songs and nature arts and crafts along with opportunities for:

  • Tree climbing
  • Wildlife viewing
  • Bush walking
  • Mud pie kitchen
  • Nature scavenger hunts

Unlike many traditional playgroups, this program is specifically designed to provide access and opportunity for our young children to engage in nature play. This is an all weather group that encourages adventure and exploration to help promote imagination and self discovery in an unstructured but supported wild space.

Whilst anyone can take their child into the bush and play, coming to playgroup allows children to form friendships and gives them a sense of belonging, as well as a connection with and desire to protect the spaces we regularly visit. When a child feels like they truly belong, they can begin to push their own limitations and are free to discover who they are and what they are capable of achieving.

Why do you cost more than other playgroups?

We are a small business, run by two stay-at-home Mums. Though we have a fantastic relationship with Playgroup QLD, we unfortunately are unable to run Playgroups under their insurance as we run our Playgroups near water. Therefore we need to insure ourselves, which as you can imagine is quite costly. We also, unlike other playgroups, pay our co-ordinators for their time. We want to support local mothers who want to stay at home and/or work in an environment where they can bring their children. Paying them enables us to do this. We also hire back-up staff so that when our co-ordinators are sick, they can stay at home with their children, instead of bringing them to playgroup and spreading illness.

Why am I paying for my child to free play? I can take my child to the creek/beach/forest etc myself for free.

Yes you can! And we strongly encourage you to continue doing this on a regular (at a minimum weekly) basis for at least two hour stretches at a time in all kinds of weather. We offer this playgroup for parents who want to explore the coast, for parents who (like us) need to commit and pay for something to get them out the door, for parents who want to meet like-minded families and for parents who want to learn more about how to be safe and feel comfortable taking children outdoors in nature. If you are doing all these things, you don't need us!

But we will not offer more structured play for pre-school aged children. We are free-play and adventure play advocates. There are plenty of other places and activities where children can sit and craft and make art and play music. Our whole aim is to simply get more children outdoors in nature.

This is one of the reasons we offer a free trial - so you can see if we're the right fit for your family!

How is playgroup different from Forest School/Kindy/Adventurers?

Playgroup is a two hour session that has a heavy focus on free play, simple craft, songs and stories. Our other programs including our Kindy/Adventurers day (although catering to a similar age group) will give children access to tool use, creating and cooking over a camp fire and other riskier activities. Playgroup is held at different locations each week whilst our other programs are generally in the same location (with the odd excursion to a different environment.)
